Tip #331

On Android, instead of downloading the file again, open it straight from the download dialog.

Whenever you start downloading a file in Vivaldi on Android that you’ve already downloaded in the past, you’ll be asked whether you want to download the file again or cancel. You’ll probably just want to open the file in that case, right?

Instead of tapping on Cancel and going to the Downloads Panel or roaming around your phone’s file folders to locate the file in question, just tap on the file title (written in blue) on the dialog. It’ll open the file for you.

Read Vivaldi’s Help pages in your language.

On help.vivaldi.com we have a large selection of articles teaching you about the countless features of the Vivaldi browser and services. With the help of our amazing volunteer translators, in addition to English, we’re able to offer Help pages in a few different languages.

When viewing an article, look below the title and table of contents to see in which languages the article is available in. Click on the language to switch to the translated version.

Where we have translated more than half of the articles, you can also select the language from the menu in the top right corner of the page and view the whole site in it.

In case we haven’t translated Vivaldi Help into a language you’d like to read the articles in, you can use the browser’s built-in translation tool or a translation Extension of your choice.

Tip #322

Adjust page zoom per website with an easy slider in Vivaldi on Android.

In Tip #119, we shared how to change the Zoom level of text in Vivaldi on Android. Today we have an even cooler option to show you.

Did you know that you can add an option to the Vivaldi menu that allows you to change the zoom level only on the open site? And it will stay the same for that website even if you navigate to other sites and then back again, or open the link in a different tab. If the developers of the website have done a good job, the text should also reflow nicely.

To enable and use zoom per site:

  1. Go to Settings > Web Pages > Accessibility.
  2. Enable “Show zoom option in main menu”.
  3. Exit Settings.
  4. To use zoom, open the browser’s main menu.
  5. Select “Default zoom”.
  6. Tap on + and – on the side or drag the slider to change the zoom level.

Tip #318

  1. In the Tab Switcher, open the Tab Stack.
  2. Long press on the tab you want to remove from the group.
  3. Drag it toward the bottom of the screen.
  4. Release your finger, when the tab is hovering over “Remove from group”.

Hide the Status Bar to give more space for page content in Vivaldi on Android.

You can gain a few pixels for displaying more web content and/or hide distracting notification icons from view, by hiding Android’s Status Bar. It’s especially useful when you tend to browse more with Vivaldi in landscape mode.

To hide your mobile devices Status Bar while using the app:

  1. Go to Settings > Appearance > Status Bar Visibility.
  2. Select, whether to show or hide the Status Bar, or to show it in portrait mode, but hide it in landscape mode.

Tip #299

Take a screenshot of the web page with the Capture tool on Vivaldi on Android.

Sometimes grabbing a screenshot is the best way to save or share web content. Especially, if you want to share more than just images.

You could use your mobile device’s capture feature, but that will also show the status bar and the browser interface, requiring you to spend more time on cropping the output. In addition, you’ll only be able to capture the visible area of the page. Vivaldi’s Capture tool offers a better solution.

To capture a screenshot in Vivaldi on Android:

  1. Open the main Vivaldi menu and select “Capture page”.
  2. Select whether you want to capture the whole page or just the visible area.

The screenshot will be saved to your image gallery, from where you can open it for viewing, further edits, and sharing.

Reorder Tabs with drag and drop on the Tab Bar of Vivaldi on Android.

The desktop-like Tab Bar in Vivaldi on Android comes with a desktop-like option to reorder your open tabs with drag and drop. The only difference is that instead of a mouse you need to use your finger or stylus pen to do it.

  2. Drag it to the new location.
  3. Release your finger to finish the move.

Scan QR codes with Vivaldi on Android.

QR codes can be found everywhere, both in the physical world and on the web. It’s common to launch the camera app to scan QR codes and then open the scanned link in a browser or app, but if you want to open the link in Vivaldi anyway, why not use the built-in QR code scanner.

To scan a QR code with Vivaldi on Android:

  1. Open the QR code scanner in one of the following ways:
    • Tap on the Address Field to display the icon (see image below).
    • Tap on the QR code icon in the search widget on your home screen.
    • By long pressing on the app icon and selecting “Scan QR Code”.
  2. Place the frame on the phone’s screen over the QR Code or barcode.

If the scanner detects a URL, it’ll automatically open the link in a new tab. In case it detects some other information, it offers to copy the information or to do a search with it.

Bonus tip! Use the QR code generator on desktop to quickly share and open links in Vivaldi on Android. See Tip #14 for instructions.

Tip #259

Fit more tabs on the Tab Bar in Vivaldi on Android by only displaying the site favicon.

Smaller screens fit less tabs on the Tab Bar. To squeeze in a few more than usual, you can hide the tab titles and only display the website’s logo aka the favicon.

To display only the favicon for each tab:

  1. Go to the Vivaldi menu > Settings > Tabs.
  2. Toggle on “Show Tab as Favicon”.

You can win even more space, if you disable “Show X Button For Background Tabs”. That way only the active tab has the Close button visible.
