Tip #370

Make it clear what you’re replying to by quoting the forum post in your response.

In buzzing Forum discussions, it can become a little unclear which comment you’re replying to when you don’t reference the post in your response. To make it easier to follow discussions, you can quote the post or parts of it in your own post.

To quote a post on the Forum:

  1. Find a comment you want to reply to.
  2. Click “Quote” below the post on the right side.

You can even quote posts from other topics:

  1. Find a topic you want to post in.
  2. Click “Reply” to open the post editor.
  3. While keeping the editor open, navigate to the post you want to quote.
  4. Click “Quote” below the post on the right side.

Quoting will add the author’s name, the link to the topic it was posted in, and the post’s contents to your post’s editor. If the quoted post is very long, you can delete the irrelevant parts.

Tip #351

Mark Forum topics read without opening them.

It’s natural that not all discussions on the Vivaldi Forum can be relevant or interesting to you. To keep the Unread feed clean, you can mark one or more topics read without opening them.

To mark topics read:

  1. On the Unread page, click on the profile images of the topic starters. A green checkmark should replace the profile image.
  2. Above the list of topics, on the right, click on “Mark as Read”.
  3. In the drop-down menu, click on “Selected”.

If you accidentally marked a topic as read, you should be able to find the topic fairly easily again from Recent topics.

Tip #316

Help us help you by adding useful information to your Forum signature.

The best place to get an answer to any of your Vivaldi questions is the Vivaldi Forum. To get a good answer, it’s useful for the ones replying to you to know about the environment you’re using Vivaldi on. For example, a Keyboard Shortcut for Windows is not very useful, if you’re on macOS, where the same command can have a different key combination.

You could include this information in each of your posts, but you can skip the repetition by adding these details to your account’s signature, which is automatically added below each of your posts.

To add a signature to your account on the Forum:

  1. Go to your profile on the Forum, either by visiting this link https://forum.vivaldi.net/me/edit or by clicking on your avatar in the Forum’s top right corner and selecting “Profile”.
  2. Fill out the Signature field.
  3. Click “Save changes”.

You should include information about your devices’ operating system and other technical specifications, also whether you’ve installed the Stable or Snapshot version of the browser. You’re more than welcome to share other information in the signature, just keep it short.

As a spam prevention measure, you need to have earned at least 2 reputation points before you can add a signature to your profile.

Tip #268

Got a question about Vivaldi? Ask it on the Forum.

Whether wondering how to use some feature in the browser, looking for a fix to an issue or just curious about Vivaldi in general, the Forum is the place where you should go to get your curiosity satisfied. With the combined wealth of knowledge our community and team members possess, you’ll get quality answers 24/7.

Use the search function first, though. With thousands of topics, it’s likely that someone has already asked the same question, so instead of creating a duplicate topic, you can just continue the discussion.

To ask a question on the Forum:

  1. Log in to your Vivaldi account.
  2. Look for the most relevant category for your question.
  3. In that category, click “New Topic”.
  4. Give your topic a clear title.
  5. Ask your question and, when troubleshooting an issue, share as many details as possible.
  6. Click “Submit”.

Tip #246

Use Forum’s Advanced Search to find the most relevant discussions.

Vivaldi Forum is full of discussion threads about all things Vivaldi and more. If you have a question or a request, it’s best to use the search function first. The odds are that your question has already been answered or a feature request is already collecting upvotes from the community.

To use Advanced Search, click on the 3 gear icons in the Search field in the top right corner of the Forum.

You can narrow down results by the following criteria:

  • Category
  • Post author
  • Tags
  • Number of replies
  • Post time
  • Whether the search term can be found only in the topic title or also in the content
  • Whether all or only some words in results need to match the search term

Tip #210

Type “:” and the emoji name to add emojis to your posts on Vivaldi Social and the Forum.

Emojis help to convey the emotion behind your written message 😂, make the message more noticeable ⚠️ and just more fun 🤸. There are multiple ways to add emojis on Vivaldi Social and the Forum. For example, you can use the emoji picker (look for a smiley face button in the post composer) or your OS’ emoji keyboard (Win + . / ⌃ ⌘ Space). But there’s also a third option.

In the post composer, if you type a colon symbol “:” and continue typing a keyword, you’ll get suggestions that match that keyword. For example, if you type :thumbs, you’ll get suggestions for  👍 and  👎 emojis. Finish typing the name and end it with another colon or use the down arrow and Enter keys, to select and insert the emoji to your post.

The emoji names can vary per site. If just typing a keyword doesn’t come up with the emoji you’re looking for, you can find out the name by opening the emoji picker, finding the emoji and hovering over it. The name will be shown as a tooltip and next time you need the emoji, you’ll be able to just type it.

Tip #176

Check the status and availability of Vivaldi’s online services on vivaldistatus.com.

Whether we’re doing scheduled maintenance or servers are acting up despite all the love we give them, there’s always a chance that Vivaldi’s online services will be temporarily unavailable. With scheduled maintenance we notify our users ahead of time via email* and notifications on the website, so downtime wouldn’t come as a surprise. With unexpected outages our system administrators do their best to get things back up again as fast as possible.

If you’re having trouble accessing and using Vivaldi services, it’s good to check our status page on https://vivaldistatus.com, to confirm whether the services are operational or there’s something going on.

Tip #110

Choose which Forum categories you want to see in Unread and Recent.

The Vivaldi Forum is a busy place with discussions on lots of different topics. Not all of them may be relevant for you. For example, you’re probably not interested in topics in the local forum categories that have discussions in languages you don’t speak. If you wish, you can prevent topics from these categories from appearing in Recent and Unread pages of the Forum.

To unsubscribe (or re-subscribe) to a category:

  1. Navigate to the category on forum.vivaldi.net.
  2. From the menu above the list of topics (below subcategories, if there are any), click on the watched state menu.
  3. Select between:
    • Watching – shows topics both in Unread and Recent.
    • Not Watching – shows topics in Recent, but not in Unread.
    • Ignoring – doesn’t show topics neither in Unread nor Recent.

Unsubscribing from a category, unsubscribes you from all of its subcategories as well.

To get a complete overview of all topics and their watched states, go to https://forum.vivaldi.net/me/categories. There you can change the watched status for each category as well.
