Tip #62

Create a new event from highlighted text on a web page or in a Mail message.

One of the great things about the Calendar being integrated in the browser is that you can skip a bunch of steps when creating a new event. Say you’re browsing the web or reading your emails and want to create an event or a task from what you see. All you need to do is:

  1. Highlight the text you want as the event title.
  2. Right-click on the selected text to open the context menu.
  3. Click on Add as Calendar Event.
  4. Fill in the rest of the event’s information.
  5. Click Add Event.

Now you have a new event in your calendar in no time and you can just carry on what you were doing.

Tip #61

Use the built-in alarm and timer to keep track of time.

Vivaldi’s Clock feature, in addition to showing you the current time, allows you to set alarms and do countdowns. For example, set an alarm for the next meeting or start the Pomodoro timer to focus on your tasks.

To set an alarm:

  1. Click on the Clock on the Status Bar (or wherever you’ve moved it to).
  2. Select Alarm.
  3. Choose from preset alarms or create a new one by setting the time and giving it a name.
  4. Click Set.

  4. Click Start.
Bottom right corner of the browser window with the Status Bar Clock's menu open.

Tip #59

Enable “Download Messages for Offline Viewing and Searching” to access your mail without internet connection.

When you open a message in Vivaldi Mail it’s downloaded and a file for the message is created in your browser’s profile. Then you can open the email whether you have an internet connection or not. In addition, when searching, the downloaded message’s body is included in the searched content, improving search results.

To be able to view messages offline and include all message content in search even before you’ve opened the email, you only need to tick one box in Mail Settings.

To enable the setting:

  1. Go to Settings > Mail.
  2. Select an account you’ve added to Vivaldi Mail.
  3. In the Identity section, enable “Download Messages for Offline Viewing and Searching“.
Vivaldi Settings window, with focus on "Download Messages for Offline Viewing and Searching" setting.

Tip #58

Press F2 / ⌘E to open Quick Commands.

Quick Commands in Vivaldi is a powerful universal search, wrapped in a minimal, command line interface. From Quick Commands you can execute commands, search for open and recently closed tabs, open bookmarks and a lot more.

The fastest way to open Quick Commands is to use the Keyboard shortcut F2 / ⌘ E, but you can also open it from  Vivaldi menu button Vivaldi menu > Tools > Quick Commands or create a Mouse Gesture for the action.

Then just start typing what you’re looking for, select the correct item on the list and press Enter (or click on the item).

Vivaldi browser with Quick Commands open on the Start Page.

Tip #57

Enable Desktop site from the Vivaldi menu on Android, to view desktop versions of websites.

To display a desktop version of the website, instead of the mobile version commonly displayed on smaller screens, open the Vivaldi menu buttonVivaldi Menu and tick the box for Desktop Site.

To permanently display desktop versions of all websites:

  1. Go to Vivaldi menu button Vivaldi Menu > Settings > Web pages.
  2. Enable Always Show Desktop Site.

Tip #56

Click on the “moon” button to switch Vivaldi Webmail to dark mode.

You can access your Vivaldi email account on webmail.vivaldi.net, where Webmail’s Elastic (default) theme offers both light and dark versions.

Click on the moon icon at the bottom left corner of the page to switch to dark mode.

When dark mode is enabled, click on the sun to return to light mode.

Tip #55

Install the Linux ARM version of Vivaldi on Raspberry Pi.

The selection of devices Vivaldi can be installed on keeps growing. Recently the Android version of Vivaldi became available in Polestar and Renault cars and it’s possible to use Vivaldi on Steam Deck. But we have been making builds for Linux based ARM devices, which includes the popular Raspberry Pi, for a few years now.

Click the button below to download Vivaldi.

For additional instructions and tips for installing and running Vivaldi on Raspberry Pi, check out this Help page.

Tip #54

Click on the padlock on the Address Bar to access Site Settings.

Behind the padlock icon on the left side of the Address Bar, you’ll find a lot of useful information about the website you currently have open.

  • Information about connection security and certificates.
  • Allowed and blocked permissions.
  • Allowed and blocked cookies.
  • Additional settings.

The padlock indicates that the connection is secure. But you may also see the following icons in place of the padlock:

  • – your connection to the site is not private and you should not share any sensitive information (e.g. passwords) with the site.
  • – your connection is not fully secure and you should be careful about sharing any sensitive information (e.g. passwords) with the site.
  • – you’re viewing Vivaldi’s internal page (e.g. vivaldi://about) or a local file.
  • – on Start Page, instead of the Site Info button, you’ll see a search icon.

Tip #53

Hold down the right mouse button and scroll to cycle through tabs.

Ctrl/⌘ + Tab and Ctrl/⌘ + Shift + Tab are well-known Keyboard Shortcuts used for cycling through tabs, but in Vivaldi you can also cycle using just your mouse.

To do that, first check that Switch Tabs by Scrolling has been enabled in Settings > Tabs > Tab Features > Tab Cycling. Then you can hover the mouse cursor over the Tab Bar and scroll to switch tabs. Alternatively, regardless of where the mouse cursor is located in the Vivaldi window, you can hold down the right mouse button or ALT key and scroll to cycle through tabs.

To make cycling through tabs even better, enable Show Tab Cycler from Settings > Tabs > Tab Features > Tab Cycling. That way, instead of switching to the next tab immediately, you scroll through tab previews and switch only after you’ve selected a tab and release the right mouse button or ALT key.

Tip #52

Right-click on a contact in the Contacts Panel and select View All Messages to see all emails they’ve sent.

Contacts Panel has all contacts that you have sent emails to or who have emailed you. To see a list of all messages a saved contact has sent you:

  1. Right-click on their name/email in the Contacts Panel.
  2. Select View All Messages.

Mail tab with their email messages will open.

If you already have the Mail tab open and have found one email from the contact, select it and press E on your keyboard to see all their other emails.

Tip #51

Type vivaldi://restart in the Address Field to restart the browser.

Perhaps you changed a setting that requires a restart to be applied or you want to clear cookies and history (if your browser configuration clears them on exit) or something else. Whatever the reason, sometimes you just need to restart the browser.

You can of course just close the browser, locate Vivaldi among your Task Bar or Desktop shortcuts and open it again from there, but that can become tedious, if you have to do it often.

As an alternative, you can just type “vivaldi://restart” in the Address Field and press Enter.

Furthermore, you can add Restart as a menu item. To do that:

  1. Go to Settings > Appearance > Menu > Menu Customization.
  2. From the Commands column, drag “Open Link” to the menu, where you want the command to be. For example, you could add it near “Exit” in the Vivaldi Button menu.
  3. Name the command “Restart”.
  4. In the URL field, enter “vivaldi://restart”.
  5. To finish, press Enter on your keyboard.
  6. Check the menu to see the new command.

Tip #50

Ctrl / ⌘ + click on the URL to cut the link at the point you clicked on and go to that page.

On websites with many levels and subpages, instead of looking for a link to the higher level on the website, you can hold down the Ctrl / ⌘ key and click on the URL in the Address Field. See the video for a demonstration.

Tip #49

Press K, G or M on your keyboard to mark messages in Vivaldi Mail and Feeds as read.

In Vivaldi Mail and Feeds, messages don’t get marked read automatically. You’ll actively have to tell the client that you’re done with the message. This way you don’t need to remember to mark a message unread again, in case you want to follow up on it later.

Messages can be marked as read using a button in the user interface, through menus or using shortcuts. Probably the fastest way to mark messages as read is to use a single key shortcut.

Before you start using the shortcuts, make sure you’ve enabled single key shortcuts for Mail, Calendar and Feeds in Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts.

To mark messages as read use one of the following keys:

  • K – mark message as read.
  • G – mark message as read and open the next unread message.
  • M – mark all messages in the message thread as read.

If you wish, you can edit the shortcuts in Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Mail.
