Tip #18

Switch Themes with a keyboard shortcut.

Not in the mood for the current theme, but don’t feel like opening Themes Settings either to pick a different one? No problem. In Vivaldi, you can switch to the next theme in your Theme Library with a Keyboard Shortcut.

Since the command doesn’t come with a default shortcut, you first need to assign one to it.

  1. Go to Settings > Keyboard > View.
  2. Find the command ‘Next Theme’ on the list.
  3. Assign a shortcut to it.

Now, whenever you feel like changing the theme, just use the shortcut. Use it multiple times in a row to shuffle through all themes in your Theme Library.

By the way, you can also type “Next Theme” in Quick Commands or use a Mouse Gesture.

Tip #17

Organise your Tab Stacks by renaming them.

When you group tabs into a stack, the icon and title of the most recent active tab in the stack will be shown on the Tab Bar. With many tabs and stacks, locating the tab you need can still take time. Tab Stack renaming to the rescue!!! By giving the stack a title, you can spot the right stack on the Tab Bar in no time. 💪

There are a couple of ways to rename a Tab Stack.

Option 1

  1. Right-click on the Tab Stack.
  2. Select Rename Tab Stack from the context menu.
  3. Give the Tab Stack a name.
  4. Press Enter or focus elsewhere in the browser to save the new name.

Option 2

  1. Double-click on the Tab Stack.
  2. Give the Tab Stack a name.
  3. Press Enter or focus elsewhere in the browser to save the new name.

In case you have enabled minimizing tabs or closing tabs on double-click, it’s not possible to start renaming a Tab Stack with double-click.

Option 3

  1. In the Window Panel, right-click on the Tab Stack.
  2. Select Rename from the context menu.
  3. Give the Tab Stack a name.
  4. Press Enter or focus elsewhere in the browser to save the new name.

Right-click on a Panel and select Separate Width to resize only the selected Panel.

Not all Panels are equal. Give each Panel the width it needs to display the content in the best possible way.

To resize a Panel:

  1. Right-click on a Panel you want to resize.
  2. Select Separate Width from the context menu.
  3. Place the mouse cursor over the outer edge of the Panel and drag to resize.

Tip #14

There are multiple ways to generate a QR code on the desktop version of Vivaldi.

Option 1

  1. Make sure you’ve enabled the QR Code Generator in Settings > Address Bar > Address Field Options.
  2. Open the web page you want to generate the QR code for.
  3. Click on the QR code button on the right side of the Address Field.

  3. Use the shortcut whenever you want to create a new QR code.

When the code has been created, you can download the QR code as an image, copy the QR code image or show your device’s screen to someone, who can scan the QR code with their device.

Generate QR codes on Android

To create a QR code on your Android device:

  1. Open the web page you want to generate the QR code for.
  2. Go to the Vivaldi menu > Share.
  3. From the bottom row of options (screenshot, copy link, etc.) swipe left and select QR Code.

When the code has been created, you can either download the QR code as an image or show your device’s screen to someone, who can scan the QR code with their device.

Tip #13

Type “Show Webpage Access Key Shortcuts” in Quick Commands to see which shortcuts you can use on the open web page.

Access Keys are a way to use a website’s key functionalities through keyboard shortcuts. Each website defines these shortcuts themselves.

To view the available shortcuts, either:

To use the shortcut, hold down Shift+Alt (Ctrl ⌥ on maOS) and the listed key to run the shortcut on the open web page.

Wikipedia.org, with the website's access keys listed in a pop up window.

Tip #12

Go to chrome://settings to access additional browser settings.

Vivaldi is based on Chromium. This means that we inherit the settings Chromium comes with. We have transferred all the important settings to Vivaldi Settings, where they can be accessed together with settings that are unique to Vivaldi.

To access the settings that are not available in Vivaldi Settings, type chrome://settings to the Address Field. Once the page loads, the URL will automatically change to vivaldi://settings. Typing vivaldi://settings directly to the Address Field will, however, take you to the main Vivaldi Settings.

Tip #11

On the left side of the Address Field, click on 🔍 to search for the entered word/phrase or to go to the entered URL.

Most of us probably just press Enter on our keyboards when we’re ready to do a search or open a website, but did you know there’s a button in the user interface you can click instead?

The Site Info button turns into a Go to Address button on the Start Page or when you’ve entered something in the Address Field. Just click on the magnifying glass, when you’re ready to see the search results or load the web page.

In case you’ve used a search engine nickname before your search term, you’ll see the chosen search engine’s logo instead. You can click that one too.

Tip #10

On Android, when adding a web page to the Reading List, also download the page for offline view.

If you know you won’t have internet connection for a longer period, for example, on a long flight and you want to spend the time reading the interesting articles you’ve saved in your Reading List, make sure to download the pages.

  1. Open the web page you want to save.
  2. Tap on the Vivaldi menu button and select Download Page.
  3. Open the Vivaldi menu again. This time select Reading List.
  4. Tap on Add Current Page in the top right corner of the Reading List menu.

You’ll already be able to view the page offline after downloading it, but you’ll need to find it from your downloads. For easy access it’s best to save the page in the Reading List as well.

Tip #9

Change the look of Vivaldi’s user interface with custom CSS modifications.

If you’re familiar with reading and writing code, you can edit the desktop browser’s user interface with your own custom CSS modifications.

To get started:

  1. In vivaldi://experiments, enable “Allow for using CSS modifications”.
  2. In Settings > Appearance > Custom UI Modifications, select the folder where you’ll store all your custom CSS files.
  3. Restart the browser.

Now you can start inspecting the user interface using Developer Tools, write up your own CSS for the elements you want to change and see the browser transform to fit your preferences even more.

Vivaldi Community shares and works on modifications together on the Forum’s Modifications category. Feel free to ask assistance and share your work there.

Important! Code shared on the forum has not been reviewed by the Vivaldi Team. Which means that issues, including security issues, may be present.

If you don’t want to risk corrupting your main browser profile, test your modifications in a different User Profile or use a Standalone version of Vivaldi.

Tip #8

Highlight text on a web page, right-click on the selection and select “Search…” to get results in an instant.

Instead of copying and pasting or, heaven forbid, manually typing a search term from a web page to the Address or Search Field,

  1. Highlight the text you want to search with.
  2. Right-click on the highlighted text.
  3. Select Search [your default search engine] for [highlighted text].
To search with a different search engine, hover over Search With and choose a search engine.

Tip #7

Click on the blue circle on your Forum profile to find all your content and followed posts.

When you go to your Vivaldi Forum profile on https://forum.vivaldi.net/me (or click on your profile image in the top right corner of the Forum and then on your username), you’ll find a 🔵 blue circle on the right side of the profile page.

Clicking on the button will open a menu with a lot of useful options. For example, you can see a list of all the discussions you’ve started (Topics) and comments you’ve made (Posts). Useful, when you’re looking for that one post you made ages ago.

In addition, you can manage the categories that you watch. Posts in the watched categories appear in the Unread and Recent sections of the Forum.

Open profile page menu.

Tip #6

Long press on the Vivaldi app icon on Android to quickly open a new tab or a new private tab.

Did you know that you can open access menus on Android by long pressing on the app’s icon? Many of you probably did, but if you didn’t… You’re welcome! 😄

In Vivaldi’s access menu, in addition to general app controls, you can access a few useful Vivaldi specific options.

  • Open a new tab, which opens Vivaldi’s Start Page with your favorite bookmarks on the Speed Dial.
  • Open a new private tab, for a more private browsing. 🤫
  • If there’s a QR code somewhere nearby and you want to see what’s behind it, you can also launch Vivaldi’s QR scanner straight from that menu.
Vivaldi app on the Home screen with access menu open.

It’s not just Vivaldi that has additional options available in the access menu. Check your other apps to see which useful features they have to offer and up your game not just while using Vivaldi, but also while using your mobile device in general.
