Tip #309

Install Vivaldi Social as a Progressive Web App to use it in an independent window.

Vivaldi Social (and other Mastodon instances) can be accessed in Vivaldi through a web page in a Tab or Web Panel and you can connect to the Fediverse from Mastodon’s desktop and mobile apps. If you’d like to have something between the two, you can install Vivaldi Social as a Progressive Web App, which allows you to use Vivaldi Social with the Vivaldi Browser, but in its own dedicated window.

To install Vivaldi Social as a PWA on desktop:

  1. Open social.vivaldi.net in a tab.
  2. Right-click on the tab to open the context menu.
  3. Select “Install Vivaldi Social”.
  4. Click Install to add an icon to your desktop.

You can also create a shortcut for Vivaldi Social in Vivaldi on Android:

  1. Open social.vivaldi.net in a tab.
  2. Open the browser’s main menu.
  3. Select “Install App”.
  4. Tap on “Install”.
  5. Tap on “Add” or drag the icon to the Home screen.

Tip #304

Group people you follow on Vivaldi Social into Lists to create filtered timelines.

If you follow many different types of accounts on Vivaldi Social, the main Home timeline can feel like a huge smorgasbord of content. To focus on one topic or group of people at a time, divide the accounts you follow into Lists.

To create a list:

  1. Go to the Lists page.
  2. In the text box that says “New list title” give your new list a name.
  3. Click “Add list”.

To add people to Lists:

  1. Open the list.
  2. Click on “Show settings” > “Edit list”
  3. Enter the usernames of the people you want to add to the list.
  4. Click on “Add to list” next to their name.

Alternatively:

  1. Visit the user’s profile.
  2. From the account menu, select “Add or Remove from lists”.
  3. Select which lists you want to add the user to.

Lists’ timelines can be accessed from the menu column on the right side of the page.

Tip #294

Avoid unwanted messages by only allowing people you follow to send you a direct message on Vivaldi Social.

Like any social media or public communication channel, Mastodon, including our Vivaldi Social instance, isn’t immune to spam and other bad actors. Luckily, it has many useful settings you can toggle on and off to make your experience on the Fediverse more pleasant. One of them is preventing users that you don’t follow from sending you a direct message.

To enable the setting:

  1. Go to Preferences > Notifications > Other Notification Settings.
  2. Enable “Block direct messages from people you don’t follow”.
Vivaldi Social's notification preferences page with "Block direct messages from people you don't follow" setting highlighted.

Tip #278

Disable image cropping in Vivaldi Social to always see images in their full size.

Posts with tall images will require you to scroll more to get to the next post in the feed and if there are many posts like that, you’ll end up scrolling a lot. That’s why they’re cropped by default. If the content seems interesting you can click on the image to see it in full.

If you prefer to always see images in their full size and don’t mind scrolling, you can disable the cropping. To do that:

  1. Go to Preferences > Post Layout.
  2. Disable “Crop images in non-expanded posts to 16×9”.
  3. Click “Save Changes” at the top or bottom of the page.

Tip #273

Only allow people you approve of to follow you on Vivaldi Social.

Not everyone needs to be able to keep track of what we post on social media. That’s why in Vivaldi Social you have the power to decide, who is able to follow your account.

To enable manual follow approvals:

  1. Go to Preferences > Profile.
  2. Tick the box for “Require follow requests”.

Then every time someone wants to follow you, you’ll get a notification and you can either approve or decline their follow request.

Tip #249

Add notes to accounts you follow to remember the reason you started following them.

If you follow a lot of people on Vivaldi Social, then after a while you might start to wonder, why did you start following one person or another. Luckily, Vivaldi Social has a neat little feature that allows you to add notes to accounts, so that even after months and years, you can check the account and get a reminder.

And don’t be afraid to be honest in these notes. They’re only visible to you.

To add a note to an account:

  1. Go to the person’s profile.
  2. Look for the Note section.
  3. Enter a note about the account.

Tip #241

  1. Go to the account’s profile on Vivaldi Social.
  2. Make sure you follow the account.
  3. Click on Notify me when @username posts between Unfollow and account menu buttons.

Then whenever there’s a new post, you’ll find a notification about it on your Notifications page.

Tip #225

Subscribe to posts from users you follow on Vivaldi Social only in the languages you understand.

In Tip #155 we showed you how to filter posts in various public timelines based on the languages you speak. This time we’ll tell you how to fine tune in which languages you see posts from users you follow.

To change language subscription per user:

  1. Go to the user’s profile.
  2. Click on the Menu button near the Unfollow button.
  3. Select Change Subscribed Languages.

Tip #210

Type “:” and the emoji name to add emojis to your posts on Vivaldi Social and the Forum.

Emojis help to convey the emotion behind your written message 😂, make the message more noticeable ⚠️ and just more fun 🤸. There are multiple ways to add emojis on Vivaldi Social and the Forum. For example, you can use the emoji picker (look for a smiley face button in the post composer) or your OS’ emoji keyboard (Win + . / ⌃ ⌘ Space). But there’s also a third option.

In the post composer, if you type a colon symbol “:” and continue typing a keyword, you’ll get suggestions that match that keyword. For example, if you type :thumbs, you’ll get suggestions for  👍 and  👎 emojis. Finish typing the name and end it with another colon or use the down arrow and Enter keys, to select and insert the emoji to your post.

The emoji names can vary per site. If just typing a keyword doesn’t come up with the emoji you’re looking for, you can find out the name by opening the emoji picker, finding the emoji and hovering over it. The name will be shown as a tooltip and next time you need the emoji, you’ll be able to just type it.

Tip #176

Check the status and availability of Vivaldi’s online services on vivaldistatus.com.

Whether we’re doing scheduled maintenance or servers are acting up despite all the love we give them, there’s always a chance that Vivaldi’s online services will be temporarily unavailable. With scheduled maintenance we notify our users ahead of time via email* and notifications on the website, so downtime wouldn’t come as a surprise. With unexpected outages our system administrators do their best to get things back up again as fast as possible.

If you’re having trouble accessing and using Vivaldi services, it’s good to check our status page on https://vivaldistatus.com, to confirm whether the services are operational or there’s something going on.

*Make sure you’re subscribed to Technical Updates on your account’s profile on Vivaldi.net.

Tip #174

Add alternative text to images you post on Vivaldi Social and Community Blogs.

Alternative or alt text is a short description of what is shown on the image. It is shown when the image can’t be displayed and is indexed by search engines. More importantly, alt text is used by screen reader software that helps visually impaired people browse the web. To contribute to making the web accessible for everyone, it’s strongly encouraged to add proper alt text to any images accompanying your posts on Vivaldi Social, Community Blogs on Vivaldi.net and other places on the web.

To add alt text to images you post on Vivaldi Social:

  1. Add an attachment to your post.
  2. Click on Edit in the top right corner of the image preview.
  3. Enter a description.
  4. Click Apply.

To add alt text to images in your blog posts:

  1. Upload or add an image from the Media Library to your blog post.
  2. Select the image.
  3. In block settings on the right side, look for Image Settings.
  4. Enter a description in the Alt text (alternative text) section.

Keep the description brief. If the image has text, it’s good to include it in the description. There’s no need to add alt text, if the image is only decorative and not related to the content.
